1963年5月，出于对R&B（节奏布鲁斯）的共同热爱，五名从小生活在伦敦以西的两个村镇——Richmond和Kingston的小伙子--Keith Relf、Jim McCatry、Chris Draja、Paul Samwell-Smith及Anthony Topham组合成立了The YardBirds。六个月后，由于Topham音乐方面的局限性及一些个人问题离开了乐队。同时，短发而严肃的Clapton在Draja的介绍下加入了The YardBirds。
